As well as recording data, EnviroMon can be configured to sound an alarm if a parameter goes out of range (high or low) or if a sensor fails.
There are four main alarms:
- The EL-008 logger contains a built-in audible alarm. If the area where the logger is mounted is continuously manned, the built-in alarm is sufficient.
- Remote audible alarms - use with EL-005 logger to provide an audible alarm, or anywhere on the network as an additional alarm with the EL-008 logger.
- Telephone Autodialer - use to send telephone messages.
- SMS text messages - when connected to a GSM modem, the EL-005 logger can send text messages to a mobile phone.
EL042 Alarm and Relay Unit
- Built-in audible alarm
- Activate an external telephone dialer
- Trigger up to 3 alarm devices
The EL042 is an alarm and relay unit for the EnviroMon data logging system. When the EL042 detects an alarm condition, it can activate its built-in sounder, send a message by activating an external telephone dialer, or trigger up to three user-supplied alarm devices connected to its opto-isolated outputs.
The EL042 can be powered from the EnviroMon network or an external 12 volt power supply. The unit includes a rechargeable backup battery that allows the EL042 to maintains its alarm outputs for several hours in the event of a power failure.
Using the EL042 you can enable the "deviation alarm" feature in the EnviroMon software. With this advanced feature you can set up the EnviroMon system to monitor a number of channels as a group. Your EL042 can then activate an alarm if any channel differs from the group average, or from any other channel in the group, or from the median of the group, by more than a specified amount. You can even define nested groups of sensors.

EL-006 Remote Alarm
The 65dB EL-006 remote alarm is useful when the room where the logger is located is not often occupied. One or more remote alarms can be connected at any place along the network where staff would be able to hear the audible alarm.
EL-019 Autodialer
If it is necessary to respond to alarms when the site is unmanned, the alarm dialer module can make telephone calls to several numbers and deliver a voice message.
The EL-019 autodialer can be programmed with a list of emergency telephone numbers. When there is a problem, the dialer calls each of the telephone numbers in turn until someone answers, then it gives a message saying that there is a problem. The dialer behaves in the same way as any normal extension and does not affect the operation of other telephones connected to the same line.
The EL-019 is only suitable for use with UK phone systems. Overseas customers should contact their local distributor for a suitable alternative.
Supplied with the autodialer is the EL-018 adapter. The EL-018 serves three purposes:
- it controls the dialer
- it provides power for the dialer and for the system
- it can provide battery backup for much longer periods than the logger's internal backup
The dialer adapter is supplied in a grey plastic box with a clear lid. The box has a large hole each side for cables. There is space for a 1.2AH battery inside the box: this will provide backup for 12 to 24 hours, depending on the configuration. Alternatively the unit can be connected to a larger, 12V lead acid battery (for example a car battery) outside the box: this could provide backup for many days.
The Speech Dialer can give three messages for different types of problem:
- temperature out of range or sensor fail
- mains fail for more than five minutes
- network fail for more than five minutes
Alarm Options
When the EnviroMon network is being set up there are several alarm options that can be configured for each sensor.
High and Low Threshold
Alarms can be enabled or disabled for each sensor.
Enabled sensors can have both high and low thresholds.
It may be desirable to have an alarm on sensor failure, but not if a parameter goes out of range. This can be done by leaving the alarm enabled and setting a wide parameter range.
Hold Off
If the parameter normally goes out of range for short periods, it is possible to hold off (delay) alarms for a specified period. For example, if a freezer periodically goes through a defrost cycle lasting 15 minutes, an alarm holdoff of 20 minutes would prevent the defrost cycle from causing alarms.
Disable
If it is necessary to keep the parameter in range only during working hours, it is possible to specify the time range and days of the week that the alarm should be enabled. It is also possible to disable the alarm during holiday periods.
